Today is World AIDS Day.
The last three presidents of the United States were on the GW campus today speaking about the issue. This is all well and good. Except that EVERY DAY is world AIDS day.
It's been really cool getting to work with HIV services at Children's National Medical Center. DC has a huge huge HUGE HIV issue compared to many other areas of the country. The medical and mental health teams deliver absolutely OUTSTANDING services to these patients. It's cool to be a part of. However, it pains me to think of the millions of children who have been infected and/or orphaned by this disease who have zero access to the antiretroviral therapy that could permit them to lead fairly normal, healthy lives.
We are so blessed to live in this country. You can balk at the broken healthcare system all you want. But really people, it could be a whole lot worse. All you have to do is to look outside the borders of this country. Everywhere else it is worse. Much worse.
